The Argus C3, famously known as 'the brick' due to its box-like shape, is one of the most successful 35mm cameras ever made in America. Making its debut in 1939, this camera sold over 2 million units and its production run lasted until 1966. It is widely recognized in the photography world, with most photographers having used or encountered one in their lives.
The C3 was a successor to the Argus C and C2 models, and brought with it a range of enhancements. It featured a coupled rangefinder and flash synchronization, as well as the ability to change lenses. The camera boasts simple shutter speed controls which, over the years, was lowered from an initial ten speeds to five. The aperture can be set on the lens barrel and the shutter can be manually armed prior to firing, offering the possibility to do double exposures.
The later C3 Matchmatic was an Argus C3 equipped with an accessory selenium cell meter. The typical Argus C3 comes with a 50mm f3.5 lens and has a maximum shutter speed of 1/300th of a second.
